Interview & Investigate
Most of us have ancestors who came to Canada as immigrants. Some of us have ancestors who are First Nations and are Canada's original citizens. Find a family member or friend who knows about how they came to Canada. Below is a downloadable document with some questions that can guide your investigation, but feel free to ask any other questions you can think of. Make sure to write down what you've learned so you can share it with your class.
- What is the name or names of the person(s) you are interviewing and what are the names of the people who your investigation is about?
- What country did they come from?
- Why did they want to come to Canada?
- How did they get to Canada? How did they travel to their Canadian destination once they got to Canada?
- Who came with them? Did anyone travel to join a family member or friend who was already in Canada?
- Did they bring any special items or traditions with them from their country to Canada?
- Where did they settle when they came to Canada?
- Does the person you've interviewed know of any interesting stories about this journey to Canada or the experiences the new Canadian(s) had once they got here?
